Union for Ohio Corrections Officers Calls for Change After Officer's Death Christmas Day

The Ohio Civil Service Employee Association (OCSEA) is calling on Governor Mike DeWine to step in.

The union wants leaders within the Ross Corrections Institution to be put on leave as the investigation into the death of Officer Andrew Lansing continues.

The union president, Christopher Mabe, says he feels the focus needs to be around three key areas: more staffing, better pay, and better monitoring of drug use and violence.

He says if all three things were handled, it could have prevented Officer Lansing's death.

"It's a systematic failure of understanding what happens in a prison. If the people at the top haven't walked in the shoes of the rest of us, then it's outside of their understanding to know," Mabe said.

Mabe says the union is demanding action and accountability.
