Take Action: Tell Governor DeWine Department of Rehabiitation and Corrections Needs New Leadership NOW!

On Christmas morning a horrific tragedy occurred at the Ross Correctional Institution (RCI) when Correction Officer Andrew Lansing was murdered by an inmate. As shocking and devastating as this murder was, the death of officer Lansing was not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of failed leadership at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.

We know that staff died during the COVID-19 pandemic because of a lack of safety equipment, and just recently an employee was killed on a state-run training firing range. To make matters worse, DRC leadership has been unable or unwilling to solve a chronic staffing shortage which forces correction officers and prison staff to work long hours. These failures represent systemic mismanagement that has jeopardized the lives of those who serve in Ohio’s correctional institutions.

“It is imperative that we demonstrate a commitment to the safety of those who serve and protect within our correctional facilities by holding leadership at DRC accountable for their actions and inactions,” said OCSEA President Chris Mabe. “We need leadership that makes officer safety the top priority.”

It’s time to take action and bring about real change! RIGHT NOW we need you to write Ohio Governor Mike DeWine demanding new leadership at the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. Click "Start Writing" to begin taking action.
