Brown Urges Colleagues to Protect Social Security from Republican Attacks
U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), member of the Senate Finance Committee, spoke on the Senate Floor about the importance of protecting Social Security.
“When work has dignity people have a secure retirement, pensions are protected, veterans have benefits and Americans can count on Medicare and Social Security. A secure retirement shouldn’t be a partisan issue,” said Brown on the Senate Floor. “But every couple of years, Republicans want to privatize social security and go back on a bedrock promise.”
Brown is working to not only protect Social Security, but to strengthen it. In September, Brown introduced a resolution affirming the Senate’s commitment to protect and expand Social Security, so that future generations can continue to rely on. It comes as House Republicans continue to threaten to hold Social Security hostage in exchange for raising the debt limit – which followed several Republican proposals to undermine the retirement security Americans have earned by ending the program altogether.
