Biden Administration Announces More Than $46 Million to Help Revitalize Coal Communities in Ohio

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland traveled to Ohio last Wednesday to announce $46.4 million in new funding from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to reclaim abandoned mine land, create good-paying jobs and spur economic opportunity in Ohio. The announcement builds on the $46.4 million allocated to the state in the previous fiscal year.

The visit is part of the Biden-Harris administration’s fourth Investing in America tour to highlight the impact of the President’s agenda in communities across the country.

“Through President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the Department is helping to implement the largest investment in tackling legacy pollution in American history,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “These new resources are creating jobs, catalyzing economic opportunity and revitalizing coal communities as we work to clean up toxic sites and build healthier communities.”

While in Ohio, the Secretary hosted a roundtable at the LIUNA Local 265 Hall in Cincinnati with state and local AFL-CIO officers, representatives of unions that are working to remediate abandoned mine lands and cap orphaned oil and gas wells, and other stakeholders, such as the Blue-Green Alliance and Reimagine Appalachia.

“We are grateful that Secretary Halaand has returned to Ohio to make this important announcement and for President Biden’s economic agenda that invests federal funds the right way, by putting Ohioans and trade unionists to work in good paying jobs.  We are on the front end of a new era where the many historic benefits of the bi-partisan infrastructure law will continue to deliver for Ohio by rebuilding America and, in the process, lift up our workers and strengthen on our communities,” said Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga.
