Ohio Workers Memorial Day Events Happening Statewide

April 28th is Workers Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember and honor those who have lost their lives on the job in the past year.  In recognition of this solemn occasion, labor groups have planned a number of events across Ohio.

“It is our responsibility to appropriately mourn all workplace deaths and recommit ourselves to doing all we can to make all workplaces safer,” said Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga.  “This occasion also offers an opportunity for policymakers to reflect on how workplace safety regulations can have a positive impact in protecting workers,” he said.  “There are still some politicians who want to roll back these protections regardless of the deadly impact that such recklessness can create,” Burga said.

Burga also warned that pushing a so called right to work law in Ohio would only exacerbate the problem of workplace injury and death.  “The rate of workplace deaths is 49 percent higher in states with right to work laws, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics,” he said.  “We should be looking at measures that protect workers, and not be fooled by false slogans like right to work which would ultimately hurt working people across Ohio,” Burga said.

Workers Memorial Day ceremonies are planned across Ohio this week with events in Akron, Athens, Bellaire, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Lima, Mansfield, Middletown, New Philadelphia, Newark, and Toledo.  Specific details for each of the events will be advised separately to the media.
